The composer Arnold Schoenberg and the conductor Heinrich Jalowetz maintained a close friendship that lasted for four decades. It began when Jalowetz was Schoenberg’s student from 1904 to 1908 and ended in 1946 with Jalowetz’s death. The lively correspondence between the two artist friends comprises 338 letters, which are made accessible for the first time in this historical-critical edition. Beyond the horizon of the Viennese School, the correspondence offers a wide range of insights into musical, theatrical and cultural life in the first half of the 20th century, including the political changes to which the protagonists were exposed.

The edition of the letters is supplemented by further documents, including the first publication of Jalowetz’s substantial essay “Von der Ursprünglichkeit der Musik Arnold Schönbergs” from 1944. A detailed introduction sheds light on the hitherto little-known biography of Jalowetz the musician.
