This symposium presented a total of seventeen papers, a round-table discussion, and an open lecture on a new piece of music in order to illuminate some of the many facets of this complex subject. In his opening address, Rudolf Kelterborn described the rich variety of «Stage Music in Our Day» from his own knowledgeable perspective. His address was followed by a group of papers from musical and theater scholars who discussed a broad range of questions, concepts, and works related to the symposium's central topics: «Textual Dramaturgy», «Musical Dramaturgy», «Visual Dramaturgy», and «Musico-Theatrical Genres». This section of the symposium contrasted with two others held jointly with the Basel Theater and closely related to the daily world of the theater. First, Klaus Huber and Anton Haefeli talked about Huber's Schwarzerde («Black Earth»), a new stage work premièred at Basel Theater on 3 November 2001. Finally Sylvain Cambreling, John Dew, Mauricio Kagel, Wolfgang Rihm, Michael Schindhelm, Jürg Stenzl, and Jürg Wyttenbach added their wealth of experience to a discussion of «Music Theater: an Institution in Trouble?», moderated by Peter Ruzicka.
